3rd Annual Pinewood Derby at Procare

In keeping with our annual tradition, the Procare Software crew recently held their 3rd annual pinewood derby race, also known as the Firecracker 5000. This friendly competition among staff members and their families is always a highlight of the 4th of July week. Racers are judged both on speed and design. The top 3 finishers (fastest cars) and the 3 receiving the most Best of Show votes (most clever and best looking cars) all received awards.

The most successful overall car in this year’s event won two awards and was entered by the family of Vice-president Rick Waldron. Designed to look like a tube of Crest toothpaste, the Waldron car finished in the top 3 both for speed (third) and Best of Show (also third). Rick and family have done well in past competitions too, having won Best of Show in 2012 and finishing 2nd in 2011.

Finishing second in the dual elimination race was the Credit Card Car built by members of the Tuition Express Team, including: Dan Richards, Brad Olson, Marlaina Steil, John Fargason, Russ Bohall, and master builder Scott Schneider. According to team leader Dan Richards, “Our success is built on teamwork. Tuition Express has a long history of moving fast – whether it’s money or pinewood cars. The only thing faster or more streamlined than our car is Tuition Express itself”. Well, that’s true, although there was one lucky car that was faster.

That fastest car, simply known as number 14, belonged to IT Manager Kevin Malone who says his secret to success was “a smoothly shaped car and blind luck”.

In the Best of Show voting, the Payday candy bar car (by Accounting Manager Donna Slayton) took first place and was inspired by the fact that “payday makes people happy”. The car gets its realistic look by being covered in an actual Payday candy wrapper and having real crushed peanuts glued to the bumper and coated in clear shellac.

Second in the Best of Show vote went to Scott Schneider of the Tuition Express Team for his ultra-sleek “Silver Slipper”. Scott has consistently been one of Procare’s top derby car makers, having previously taken 1st place for Best of Show in 2011 and 2nd place in 2012 (as well as winning the race itself that same year).
